SELECTIONS FROM BHARTRUHARI’S NITI SHATAKAM
Bhartruhari was a famous king and he renounced the world and composed Niti Satakam consisting of one hundred verses .We have seen some of the selected verses from the Niti Satakam. Some more are given below.
The original is in Sanskrit and the verses given here are translated by the scholar (late) Sohan Lal. Our thanks to this great scholar.
WEALTH DISPOSAL IN THREE WAYS
There are three ways in which wealth may be disposed of viz., enjoyment , gift and destruction. One who has neither enjoyed it nor given it to others, his wealth must be fated with nothing but destruction.
TWO DIFFERENT STAGES OF LIFE
When anybody is suffering from poverty, he would be anxious to accept a handful of millets, and the same person when he turns out to be a wealthy man would consider the world as a mere straw. Thus, these two different stages of life make people high and low spirited and spreading and folding of all other things is dealt with in the same manner.
WEALTH IS IMPORTANT
One who is wealthy is a man of good family, a wise scholar, full of qualities and worthy of an interview. From this, it follows that all qualities are subject to wealth.
FRIENDSHIP WITH WICKED AND VIRTUOUS
Friendship with the wicked is just like the shadow of the sunshine of noon, which is very long and broad in the beginning and decreases at every moment, whereas the sincerity of the virtuous is just the opposite. It is but trifling in the beginning and as the time passes, it increases rapidly at every step and moment.
Bhartruhari’s poems are quoted by every scholar through out the length and breadth of India for the past many centuries.
All the one hundred verses are very interesting and informative. Those who read Niti Shatakam will lead a very successful life.
